Yesterday in Sydney the nominations for the 2011 ARIA Awards were announced to a anxiously awaiting crowd. In a poignant first in the ARIA Awards’ 25 year history, and a profound coda to a truly legendary career, the immortal BILLY THORPE has picked up a staggering four nominations with his final masterpiece, Tangier. Billy’s final album has picked up four nominations in the categories of BEST ADULT CONTEMPORARY ALBUM, BEST COVER ART (Aaron Hayward and David Homer - Debaser), ENGINEER OF THE YEAR (Greg Clarke) and PRODUCER OF THE YEAR (Daniel Denholm).
When Billy Thorpe passed away in 2007 he left behind an unfinished musical legacy. The masterwork 'Tangier' had consumed his life for some seven years and was nearing completion . A professional judgement was made by his musical peers that the music had to be heard – loud and clear as Billy intended. Michael Chugg, his long term friend and manager, drew a financial stake to his heart and, along with Sony's Denis Handlin, made the commitment to complete the job . As Executive Producer, Amanda Pelman assisted producer Daniel Denholm in completing the intricate musical tapestry . The work became the highest charting success Billy had achieved since early days with The Aztecs . An extraordinary video clip for 'Tangier' was produced in Morocco and lit up Australia's television screens. Michael Chugg added :
"We are incredibly proud of our contribution on Billy's behalf to complete his dream. Anything that the ARIA judges choose to bestow from these nominations will be a nod to one of Australia's greatest musical talents.
"Rusty, Lauren & I are so fantastically proud of Billy today. "Tangier" is getting some well deserved accolades, and I hope many more (millions) of people will have a listen to Billy's final work and take the incredible journey with him. Special thanks to Michael Chugg, Amanda Pelman, Mark Pope, Sony Music, Daniel Denholm, and the late Greg Clarke for their incredible faith in this project and the hard work to bring the magnificent "TANGIER" to completion.
